SIMULACRUM I
2017
Installation of 3 C-Prints 120 x 250 cm | table with varnish „Magic of the Desert“ | different editions (1929 - 2007) of Karl May „Through the Desert“
„The desert is no longer a landscape, it is a pure form produced by the abstraction of all others.“(Jean Beaudrillard)
The project Simulacrum combines text passages of Karl May’s novel „Through the Desert“ with a photographic tryptiche, which is constructed out of one original picture. On first sight it is a picture of a desert landscape. But soon one notices that the sky tilts into the picture on one side, that something is wrong with the sun and that the sand grains are too big. It is a desert-stage which questions together with the texts of Karl May the German or even European perception of desert. The desert as the other, as the alien, as the antithesis of civilization is for me the starting point to think about pre-built pictures and opinions.
